At the World Economic Forum in Davos, CEO Nir Bar Dea explains why geopolitics and technology have become the dominant forces shaping the global economy. He outlines a once-in-a-century shift away from globalization toward what Bridgewater calls modern mercantilism, occurring alongside an accelerating technological arms race that is already driving markets beneath the surface. Nir also discusses China’s role in this new world order, arguing that in an increasingly fragmented global system, China and broader Asia play an essential role in portfolio diversification.

Nir was joined in conversation by:
Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, France
Mina Al-Oraibi, Editor-in-Chief, The National
Radosław Sikorski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Poland
Moderator: Mirek Dusek, Managing Director, World Economic Forum

With the third quarter of 2025 in the books, one of the markets receiving considerable attention is the gold market. Gold is up around 50% year-to-date and recently rose above $4,000 an ounce for the first time.

The gold rally has also raised some important questions: Could we be looking at an international monetary reset, or is that overblown? Is gold on its way to becoming the world reserve currency, replacing the US dollar? And where is gold headed from here?

To explore these questions and more, Daily Observations editor Jim Haskel recently sat down with Managing Deputy Chief Investment Officer David Trinh and Head of Contra-Currencies Hudson Attar.

Blake Cecil joined Bridgewater in 2017 and as Deputy Chief Investment Officer, he partners closely with co-CIO Greg Jensen to directly oversee the full breadth of our flagship investment strategy. Blake is also a member of Bridgewater's Investment Committee and works closely with the Head of Research and Asset Class Leads to set research agendas and develop new systemized trading strategies. His expertise and contributions to Bridgewater’s mission of understanding global markets and economies and delivering for our clients have been instrumental.

His insights are regularly shared with the world’s largest and most sophisticated institutional investors and policymakers via Bridgewater’s Daily Observations and podcasts. Blake also plays an important role in cultivating the company’s culture and developing a vibrant community of investors. He oversees the Investment Associate talent program and is an unrelenting force in creating an ecosystem for that talent to succeed.

Blake is extraordinary in many ways but what makes him stand out the most, and the reason he has elevated so quickly, is his perpetual commitment to challenging the status quo in pursuit of what’s true and the best possible answers. “He has an extremely high bar and a keen ability to perceive, understand, and attack problems without hesitation or fear. He’s the kind of leader you’d want on your team — a genuine presence who is deeply knowledgeable, generous, and engaging — and a true role model to those around him,” says co-CIO Karen Karniol-Tambour.

As part of the 30th anniversary of the relationship between Bridgewater and GIC, the entity that is responsible for managing Singapore’s international reserves, our two organizations have led a series of joint research projects to identify and assess the issues we think are most important for investors to grapple with in the years ahead. In this videocast, Head of Client Service and Editor of the BDO Jim Haskel discusses the takeaways of that work with Jeffrey Jaensubhakij, Group Chief Investment Officer of GIC; Liew Tzu Mi, Chief Investment Officer for Fixed Income & Multi Asset and Chair of the Sustainability Committee; and our own co-Chief Investment Officer Greg Jensen.

The conversation focuses on four areas, the first three of which are from our joint research: (1) US exceptionalism in the economy and markets, including what produced it and whether it’s likely to continue; (2) Artificial intelligence, with a focus on AI’s potential for transformative impacts on productivity, and the challenges that stand in the way; (3) China's economy, including the deflation emanating from China and what this means for investors; and (4) Sustainability, discussing how GIC approaches its own sustainable investing efforts.

We extend our gratitude to Jeffrey and Tzu Mi for their participation in this discussion, and to GIC for 30 years of partnership.

Bridgewater CEO Nir Bar Dea was joined by Ajay Banga, President of The World Bank, as our latest guest in Bridgewater’s Distinguished Speaker Series to discuss development and economic outlooks for the African continent. Due to global demographic shifts, nearly 25% of the global working-age population will be located in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2050, yet over 600 million Africans across the continent lack access to basic resources like electricity.

In his second visit to Bridgewater’s campus, Ajay spoke to these demographic and resource trends, and how they present both emerging challenges and opportunities for global investors from the private and public sectors. Nir and Ajay discussed the origin story of Bridgewater’s efforts to support the World Bank’s International Development Association 21st replenishment, resulting in a partnership with international advocacy organization Global Citizen to produce research outlining potential economic trajectories of Africa and how growth can be furthered.

Bridgewater and Global Citizen’s partnership in support of the World Bank’s development efforts will culminate in an African Economic Assembly in Côte d'Ivoire from October 9-10. The assembly will bring together Heads of State, Finance Ministers, private sector leaders, Multilateral Development Banks and civil society to drive major financial investments to end extreme poverty across Africa.

See more: https://www.bridgewater.com/research-and-insights/world-bank-president-ajay-banga-speaks-with-ceo-nir-bar-dea-on-the-future-of-development-in-africa

One key area of focus for us has always been working with our clients to help them address the vulnerabilities in their portfolios and engineer greater portfolio resiliency. We wanted to bring you into what that actually looks and feels like by sharing a conversation with one of our clients who’s at the forefront of this type of research: Future Fund, Australia’s sovereign wealth fund, which manages $300 billion AUD.

Through our 15-year relationship with Future Fund, we’ve found that we speak a very similar language, particularly when it comes to looking at portfolios holistically in order to make them as resilient as possible. So, we were delighted to bring Future Fund CIO Ben Samild into a discussion with our own co-CIO Karen Karniol-Tambour, Head of Strategist Group Atul Lele, and BDO Deputy Editor Jake Davidson, to talk through how Ben and his team think about building an asset allocation using their total portfolio approach.

The conversation covered a number of the most challenging questions facing institutional investors, including:
- How does the total portfolio approach work in practice?
- Are benchmarks relevant, and if not, how do you assess the quality of your choices?
- How can allocators design an organization with the right culture and the right incentives to get the outcomes they want?
- Where is the macro environment headed (and what changes is Future Fund making as a result)?
- How can investors get inflation protection in a portfolio?
- How should institutions determine how many illiquid assets to hold, and what are the trade-offs? We hope you enjoy the discussion.

Editor’s note: the views of external guests do not necessarily reflect the views of Bridgewater.

The conversation covered a number of the most challenging questions facing institutional investors, including:

- How can allocators design an organization with the right culture and the right incentives to get the outcomes they want?
- Where is the macro environment headed (and what changes is Future Fund making as a result)?
- How can investors get inflation protection in a portfolio?

He touches on where we are in the long-term debt cycle, the great wealth transfer that has made the economy unusually resilient, and the related risks for investors over the long-term.
How Shipping Helps Explain the World

Macro Team Co-Head Jason Rotenberg is joined by shipping researchers J Mintzmyer and James Catlin of Value Investor’s Edge to discuss the state of global shipping and how it connects to inflation, commodity markets, geopolitical risk, China’s recovery, and other key macro issues.

Shipping may be a relatively small sector by itself, but its connection to nearly every part of the global economy makes it an important part of tracking how different themes are developing and a great tool for perceiving issues that may matter a lot down the line. And when something goes wrong—as seen during COVID—shipping can transform from a minor pressure to a very material one.

The conversation covers a wide range of topics, including what shipping tells us about the state of COVID-era supply problems, China’s economy, Europe’s ability to obtain natural gas, the potential for disruption in the oil market, how geopolitics are affecting supply chains, and the impact of ESG and the green energy transition on investment.

Recorded August 28, 2023

<itunes:summary>Macro Team Co-Head Jason Rotenberg is joined by shipping researchers J Mintzmyer and James Catlin of Value Investor’s Edge to discuss the state of global shipping and how it connects to inflation, commodity markets, geopolitical risk, China’s recovery, and other key macro issues.
